If you have not been to Lake Benson Park, it may be helpful to click on the link I'll provide to see the map. There are 2 parks here, White Deer and Lake Benson. I will be parking at Lake Benson Park at the end of the road, behind Shelter #1 where the restrooms are, so that I'll be close to the lake for painting (see map at http://www.garnernc.gov/Publications/Parks%20and%20Recreation/WDP%20LBP%20Trail%20Map.pdf ) White Deer Park is on the other side of Buffaloe Rd from Lake Benson Park, and is more of a nature trail area with a stream. It is an option to the lake side, if you are interested (see map again) There is a photo album within PaintNC groups online of last year's painting outing at Lake Benson.

Docent led tour of the the NCMA's permanent collection with a special emphasis on Landscape painting. The tour is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. and will be about 50 minutes. Please meet at 10:15 a.m. inside the main doors to the new NCMA building. Then we have reservations at the Iris restaurant for 11:45 a.m.

[Please note; We will be ordering from the regular menu and will each be paying separately.]

PLEASE RSVP by August 22 so:
1. I will know that we have the minimum 10 people for the tour.
2. I can let the restaurant know how many people to expect for lunch.

The grounds of the NCMA are very nice to paint. If you have time, you can still paint or draw before the tour. [I did a painting of the pond area and sold it last winter.] Another idea is to take time before the tour to walk the paths and take photos.

Saturday; 8am - Come whatever time you like and stay as long as you want

The Plein Air painting site for this Saturday October 16th are the blocks near Dupont Circle and Kinsey Street.

It is just a few blocks from Hillsborough Street accross the Boylan Avenue Bridge on the left. There are hardscapes, landscapes, quaint houses, gardens, rail lines, bridges and skylines.

Just a few blocks over on Hillsborough are Char-Grill and Snoopy's.
I have to say that I frequent both establishments.  Snoopy's has great chicken salad sandwiches and their Home Made Vegetable Soup begins being served October 15th. Yea!  Chargrill does the burger and fry thing quite well.

The North Carolina Botanical Garden (ncbg.unc.edu) encompasses several acres of display gardens, an education center (with restrooms), a number of natural areas, and extensive trails through a woods with hillsides and a stream. The display gardens include a large paved patio inset with beds of carnivorous plants like pitcher and flytraps, plus many "garden rooms" and beds of interesting and unusual plants, shrubs, and trees, sculptures, and furthest from the entrance, a small log cabin in a fern glen. Be sure to bring your camera!

Gaining admission for us to paint here required submitting a proposal and assuring the "powers that be" that we will use utmost courtesy in the garden spaces. We are allowed to set up and paint only where we will not block and trails and walkways, and of course only in open spaces (not the planting beds).

No food is available. If interested, we could go to lunch at Southern Season's restaurant, the Weathervane. It is about 5 minutes from the botanical garden. Let me know if you would like to do this and I will make a reservation for us.

The garden is located just off Highway 54 in Chapel Hill. It has ample parking, but you will have to walk a short distance from the parking lot to enter the fenced garden area or to access the trails in the woods.

Near Five Points. Just a cool creek with big rocks, park near the foot bridge on Oxford Rd. No parking restrictions. No rest rooms or food.

Oxford Rd is between Overbrook or Dunhill Dr and Kenmore or Reaves Dr. It is a stretch of road that does NOT have NO PARKING signs and parallels a beautiful little creek with rocks. Royster St is on the other side of the creek where there is parking also. It is near a beautiful green way that borders Crabtree Creek, which would be a beautiful place also to paint but I will have to show people when they come. It’s near 5 Points in Raleigh, with several cute cafe’s there.

Event Dates: 8/11/2009 - 8/11/2009

When it's too hot outside to paint, we head into Nathalie's nice air conditioned studio and do a 'paint around.' We'll each take a turn painting on several canvases that will be set up around the room. Then we'll auction these paintings off and our next exhibit. Last year's paint around paintings helped pay for our website and business cards - plus it was just a lot of fun! You're welcome to bring your own paintings to work on also.

With the summer heat in mind I have picked a site with shady places to paint from and sunny sights to paint.   I will be parked on the 800 block of Washington Street just off of Glenwood Avenue and will be painting near the 2 historic buildings.  On the mapquest map it is where the 6 mark is.  I will be at the site by 8:00 if the weather is not challenging.  If the weather is iffy I will email an update on Thursday night to everyone my plein air email list. There is plenty of shade but still bring lots of water and it will be comfortable painting.  Because of the summer heat, early is better than afternoon.

copy and paste in your internet address bar to go to a map of the site at mapquest.
